Are you looking forward to showing off your cooking skills when you’re friends come over? I know I do. That’s why I won’t risk making batch after batch in the toaster! Most toasters can only handle 2 or 4 pieces of bread at once, and that’s no way to spend a brunch or a dinner. If you don’t want to serve burnt bread, you should read on and learn how to toast bread in your oven in only one batch, and then get my easy recipe for how to toast bread in an oven for golden brown toast every time.

When Using an Oven to Toast Bread is the Best Way

Using an oven is the best way to toast lots of slices of bread if you’re looking to serve a large group of people or want perfectly consistent results. Some people might say that using an oven is too much work, but I disagree. Sure, it’s not as easy as popping bread into a toaster, but it’s worth it to see how happy your guests are or at least not disappointed by black burnt bits of toast to go with your main course.

Toaster ovens are far more inconsistent than regular ovens. Many have different settings, which vary and cause confusion if you cook in a friend’s kitchen or stay at an Airbnb. In these instances, it makes sense to use an oven instead, but here are the times when I use an oven to toast bread instead of a toaster.

  • When you need to toast more bread than one toaster batch, usually two slices or four slices are the most you can make with a toaster, so toasting bread is a chore. At the same time, you can prepare around 12 pieces at a time with an oven (This is great for holidays when you can use themed cookie cutters to add a little bit of decoration!)
  • When you want guaranteed results, toasters are inconsistent when preheating, so ovens are a better method to toast bread.
  • When you do not have a toaster.
  • When you’re not using your own toaster.

I hope you’ll agree there are a lot of times when skipping the toaster oven and turning on the conventional oven is the best way to get beautifully toasted bread.

What Temperature to Toast Bread in the Oven

You can toast bread in the oven over a range of temperatures from 350 Fahrenheit to 400 Fahrenheit depending on what texture you want your toast to have when it comes out of the oven.

If You Want Toast, That’s Golden Brown and Only Slightly Crunchy

If you want toast that’s only slightly crunchy, then you should set your oven to 350°F. This is a lower temperature so your bread won’t darken as quickly and will have a more subtle flavor.

If You Want Toast That’s Browned and Crunchy

If you want toast that’s more done, then you should set your oven to a higher temperature, around 400°F should be perfect.

It will also depend on how thick your sliced bread is; if it’s thicker than the standard sandwich cut plain bread, you’ll have to toast the bread in the oven for longer or raise the oven temperature.

How Long to Toast in the Oven?

The time to toast the bread will depend on the temperature you decided on above; if you are going for slightly toasted bread it will take approximately 6 minutes. However, if you are using a higher temperature it will take 4 to 5 minutes.

Which Oven Rack to Use for Toast?

You might be wondering which oven rack you should use for toasting bread, and the answer is the middle rack, but why?

Using the middle rack ensures that each piece of toast will get an equal amount of heat and will cook evenly. If you put the toast on the top or bottom shelf, one side of the bread will get burnt while the other side will not be toasted enough.

The Baking Sheet and Broiler Method for Making toast in the Oven

If you want your toast to be extra crispy, then you should use the broiler method.

To do this, you will need to set your oven to the “HI” broil setting (here are the symbols for that setting) and place the wire rack in the highest position under direct heat. Then, put your bread on a baking sheet in a single layer and put it in the oven. Toast for about two minutes or until the bread is how you like it.

Keep in mind that the broiler method is very quick so you will need to keep an eye on your toast so it doesn’t burn.

Adding Toppings Oven Toasted Bread

You’ll have to decide whether you want your toppings warm or not but everyone knows choosing toppings is one of the best parts of making toast so this is the fun part because of the endless possibilities.

You can make anything your imagination comes up with, from cinnamon toast bread for breakfast or garlic bread for dinner.

For Warm Toppings

Add any ingredients you want to be warmed up 2 minutes before the toast will be done. Here’s my list of toppings that go perfectly as warm ingredients on toast.

  • Seasonal Fruit Spreads – Apricot Preserves or Strawberry Jam for spring, Raspberry and Jam preserves for summer, Pumpkin Spread for fall, and Orange Marmalade for winter
  • Butter – make sure to let your butter soften while you make the toast in the oven so it’s spreadable, or you can add the butter to the toast just before it’s done.
  • Peanut Butter – weird but worth a try!
  • Hazlenut Spread

For Cold Toppings
